Greeley County wheat harvest is winding down

On the fifth day of July, CHS-United Plains Ag location manager Dirk Schneider estimated that wheat harvest is between 85-90% complete in Greeley County.  The first load came in on Monday, June 20, and a little over two weeks later, activity is beginning to wind down.
Harvest was delayed at times by unseasonable weather, including unusually cool temperatures and welcome rain in a community that’s received 2.29 less inches of moisture than normal this year.
While yields were lower than average, yields from 8 bushels to the acre to 60 have been heard throughout the county.
“It was a disappointing year yield-wise, but we could see it coming for weeks,” said Dirk. “We just didn’t get the rain we needed.”
Despite the yields, there were two distinct positive qualities – test weights that frequently ran in the 60s and high protein content, which often occurs when the wheat is stressed.
While yields may have been lower than hoped, there were pleasant surprises along the way.
“It was a blessing from above,” said David Schneider, who farms locally. “It was unbelievable; I couldn’t believe the yields were what they were. They were far above my expectations. The quality of the test weights was unexplainable, too. They were 60 plus, not 56 or lower like we thought.”
David remarked about the unusually early harvest and said he seldom, if ever, remembered wrapping up before the Fourth of July. This year, they finished cutting on June 30.
Farmers’ attention will turn quickly to fall crops and the moisture needed to produce solid yields.
“Anytime God wants to send us some showers of blessing,” David said, “I’m ready.”
Though they have fallen some as more of the crop has been harvested, wheat prices remain in the $8 range, with a local price at CHS-United Plains Ag of Tribune at $8.22 at press time.
