Dixon True Value begins closeout sale

After 34 years operating Dixon Drug & True Value in downtown Tribune, Chris and Kellee Dixon are closing the True Value portion of the business as they begin to transition into retirement. Dixon Drug (the pharmacy) and Redeeming Grounds will remain open.
Additional information about the closeout sale, which begins Wednesday, July 21, can be found at www.DixonTrueValue.com.
“We tried to sell the store; we tried to find a manager,” said Kellee. “We want to retire. We hope that in closing out our inventory, someone else can get into the business a little more inexpensively and start over.”
Additional factors that lead to the store’s closing include the supply shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and larger chains’ ability to access products while smaller retailers were left without goods. Chris recalled picking up a mower for a customer at Lowe’s in Pueblo because True Value was unable to provide one.
“Larger chains had tons of things we couldn’t get in our warehouse,” said Chris. “I think it was an example of their buying power and their clout with their manufacturers. There was a definite difference in what they could get and what we couldn’t.”
Yet, Kellee says access to goods is currently improving and believes there is opportunity for someone ambitious to come in and make a hardware store work.
“The community needs access to the products the True Value offered,” Kellee said. “I am hopeful that someone will see this space and purchase it to provide the products the community needs.”
The building remains for sale and those interested can contact Chris or Kellee for more information. The plan is for the Dixon Drug (the pharmacy) and Redeeming Grounds to remain inside the corner building, located at 422 Broadway in downtown Tribune.
While Chris and Kellee are committed to the closeout sale, both acknowledge the tremendous thoughts and emotions that surround the decision.
“We were hopeful that someone would take it over seamlessly,” said Kellee. While there has been some interest along the way, Chris said conversations never reached the point of serious negotiations.
The Dixons are grateful for the community’s support of the store for more than three decades. They bought the store from the Robertson family in 1989.
“We’re really grateful for our customers,” said Kellee. “We’ve been here a long time and the community has supported us and enabled us to raise our family.”
During the closeout sale, beginning Thursday, July 21, the store’s hours will be 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. on weekdays and 9-5 on Saturdays. The pharmacy’s hours will remain unchanged at 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. – 2 pm on Saturdays. During the sale, Redeeming Grounds’ Saturday hours will be 9 a.m.  - 4 p.m. Those interested can sign up for email updates at www.DixonTrueValue.com.
The closing date of the store is expected to occur sometime in September or October.
During the closeout sale, only cash and credit cards will be accepted for True Value products.
